The Storybook Quilt Project offers an interesting opportunity for us to aid children. Simply make a small, no larger than 36" by 36" quilt (a lap quilt for a child) to illustrate a children’s book of your choice. The books can be used with all level of elementary school readers from picture books, "I Can Read" books, and more advanced chapter books. You can illustrate the cover of a book, use a panel of fabric that has already been printed, or create your own interpretation of a child’s book. (One suggestion could be to have an image of a dinosaur or whatever on a quilt which could then be relevant to several books on dinosaurs or whatever.) To complete the project, sew an envelope on the back of the quilt, and insert the book. We will select one elementary school from each Hampton Roads city which has low reading comprehension scores (based on reading scores published by the school districts) to receive storybook quilts. All quilts will be collected in August at chapter meetings and distributed for the new school year. Storybook quilts could provide the security or the excitement needed to entice a child to better his or her reading skills! Teachers will be appreciative of the interest and comfort the quilt will provide the struggling readers, and you will feel fulfilled for helping a child learn to read.
