Community Service Opportunity!
Chesapeake Waterways Heritage Festival at Great Bridge Locks will be October
14 and 15 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

!
This festival hosts several guilds, exhibitors, and vendors from across the Commonwealth showcasing the skills, talents, and craftiness of people and their trades that have contributed to the establishment and development of this unique region. Exhibitors and vendors display, demonstrate, and sell handmade crafts including baked goods, basketry, historic Batteaus, beekeeping, doll making, fiber arts, fine art, fly fishing, fly tying, handbags, jams, jewelry, knitting, live music, living history, pottery, quilting, sewing, sheep shearing, soap making, spinning, storytelling, weaving, woodworking, and more.

The Waterways Heritage Festival features free admittance, parking, and shuttle service provided by Chesapeake Emergency Response Team and Fire Department. Also this year, attendees will be able to enjoy free the unique experience of traveling through the locks (weather permitting) and learning from Batteau and Virginia Canals & Navigations Society members about the history of transportation through the liquid highways of yesteryear. Children can learn how to make cornhusk dolls from local girl scouts, and elementary and middle school students that participate in a Scavenger Hunt Quiz are entered in a raffle for a chance to win a pizza party for their classroom. Fun for the entire family!

Other participants expected back this year include the Army Corp of Engineers; Chesapeake Community Animal Response Team; Chesapeake Emergency Response Team; Chesapeake Historic Preservation Commission; Chesapeake Fire Department; Chesapeake Library; Chesapeake Master Gardeners; Chesapeake Medical Reserve Corps; Chesapeake Office of Emergency Management; Chesapeake Parks, Recreation, & Tourism; Chesapeake Police Department; Chesapeake Sheriff's Office; Cornland School Foundation; K4AMG Memorial Amateur Radio Club; Norfolk County Historical Society of Chesapeake; U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary; Virginia Cooperative Extension; Virginia Defense Force; Youth Virginia Regiment; and more.
